Angus Hyland is a graphic designer, author and creative director. He has been named one of the UK’s top ten graphic designers by The Independent, and has received over a hundred creative awards, including five D&AD silver awards.

Best known for his work as Pentagram partner, Hyland has worked with some of the world’s best known private and public sector brands and created visual identities for several cultural institutions including: National Museums Liverpool, Sage Gateshead, Crafts Council, Luminato Arts Festival, The William Morris Society, along with exhibition design for Tate Modern and Design Museum London.

The first in our Creative Commission series, Angus has designed 10 limited edition notebooks featuring original gouache painted covers by Angus in his London studio. A poster designed by Angus in an edition of 100 is also available to purchase from our print shop and at Angus' exhibition ‘Looking for a certain ratio’ at Cass Art in Glasgow.

The notebooks were created in parallel with his forthcoming exhibition ‘Looking for a certain ratio’ which debuts in Glasgow next month, with a view to going on show as part of this year’s London Design Festival in the Autumn.

‘Looking for a certain ratio’ broadly describes Angus’s motivation, which is searching for beautiful compositions and harmonies within prescribed sacred geometry. Painted at his London studio, the paintings explore different colour palettes, from the striking combinations of tightly pigmented colour to subtle variations in pastels and monotones. Exploring different relationships between three individual reference points formed the basis of all of these intriguing compositions.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to MAKE BANK who provide art material kits and online resources for young people interested in pursuing creative careers, fighting against creative poverty and working towards a diverse industry with equal opportunities for everyone.
