This exhibition is the physical representation and installation of the narrative short film by Macarena Rubio titled A Bunch of Broken Pots. The film screening explores Gaspar’s autobiographical relationship with instability, breaking, and clay. In offering the pieces up to ‘the divine gift of breaking ’, Gaspar allows the vessels to 'meet fragility’.
Gaspar’s work balances the tensions between standing and falling through a series of expressive, intentional gestures. Questioning how far he can push the clay before it stops holding itself together. The work lives in that exchange. A dance that plays with the limits of what's possible for clay in fragility and resilience. The small delicate pieces are made with the same intentional gestures as with the larger vessels. It is a process that requires a slowing down of the wheel, and are produced under magnification, with fine tools.. The wire and clay Caricature pieces represent the imaginative mind; picturing what once was, what is, and what could have been. Whereas the larger disrupted vessels placed precariously on tall plinths record their own story of resilience, made through breaking.
At its core, Broken Pots explores the sensation of breaking as an enfolding inevitability that occurs and reoccurs; time and time again. Physically, mentally, and bodily. This exhibition accepts brokenness as a catalyst for becoming, and what it truly means to be (a) Broken (Pot). Sometimes, in the depths of brokenness, one is forced to pause, sit, dwell, and be static with the Broken. The selected works appreciate how the quiet moments in breaking may become loud.
The selected works capture the movement of stillness. Pieces have been arranged in a way that encourages a sensation of precarity that is provoked by the paradoxical relationship caught between a fear of falling and yet its familiarity.
There is a comfortability in returning to Broken Pots.
